EMERGING ARTIST - Sandrine Pelletier |
Monday, 07 November 2005 |

Where else would you find a cohesive mix of backyard wrestling, wide "toothy" grins, UFO attacks, fake vaginas and Kate Bush fans all shown through the old fashioned eyes of a worldly wise Grandma? All that is dirty and trashy is fascinating to Sandrine Pelletier, who adds a whimsical twist to her subject matter. The 29 year old graphic designer and visual artist lives and works between Lausanne, Switzerland and Paris, France. She graduated from the Ecole Cantonale d'Art de Lausanne (ECAL).
It is not a coincidence that Pelletiers work explores the juxtaposition of archaic media usage and the subject matter being of cultural post-modernity. The ex-heavy metal fan handles her medium of embroidery and crochet perfectly. "Will fight for a dream", the most famous of her projects is a sociological coverage about “Tribal Violence” and street culture in England, where she was previously living for some time. It is a series of embroideries depicting young people from a 'council estate' background, organizing events such as wrestling matches from their parents backyard. Her latest works include a collaboration with Japanese designer Tsumori Chisato is a real treat from the 'low tech, high art' Pelletier, with flying cats featuring as the main subject matter of her project.
