THE MOBILITY PROJECT (LOS ANGELES)
E-mail Tuesday, 25 July 2006

Image

The Metro Hubstat Fli System was designed to encourage individuals to use the sparse public transportation that is  being implemented around Los Angeles and in-turn alleviate some of the traffic that many of us suffer from in this fair city. Los Angeles spreads far, wide and up, into many neighborhoods that are nestled in the hills making public transportation an almost impossible option. This system was designed for any hilltop scenario with a metro system running along its base.  For the purposes of this project we chose to look at one specific hilltop neighbor in Los Angeles, Mt. Washington.

The Metro Hubstat Fli System is a people mover that attempts to link the gap between home and the MTA.  The system exists as a series of mini stations or Hubstats placed strategically throughout the neighborhood. At each of these mini stations, riders can board the Fli, purchase tickets to any point served by the Los Angeles MTA or rest during an exercise session in the hills. Once having boarded the Fli, riders can travel within the community, or head straight down to the Metro Goldline. Flis are individual units that run on a base motorized track, able to transport users up or down the hill, similar to a chair-lift. The Fli system is camouflaged to discreetly move around the neighborhood above the street, as well as the Hubstat pavilions have been designed to complement and blend with the local environment. by Colleen Coghlan

GOOGLE VISION - POINT AND AIM
E-mail Friday, 21 July 2006

Get lost? Do you? Well, yet another bright young designer from the U.K is developing a system that will have tag and name exactly what your staring at. Google Vision is a conceptual product developed by Callum Peden, for the worlds favorite search engine. The product provides the user with a truly unique information hub by combining GPS, OLED technology and advanced image recognition in the form of a retractable screen device.

The Global Positioning System will see the end of wondering the streets asking for directions and the small roller ball will allow for easy navigation of the flexible screen. Brilliant for identifying landmarks whilst on holidays, Google vision acts as  a personal; tour guide.

As well as this, advanced image recognition will mean Google Vision can target well known landmarks. Then using the increased coverage of wireless internet, provide the user with information on their surroundings wherever they may be. by Andy G

THE I-DECK - ALBUM ART LIVES ON
E-mail Thursday, 13 July 2006

Image

We all miss album cover art work, and the tiny digital cover art on your iPod just isn't the same. English designer, Michael Kennedy, has the answer that makes retro meet modern in a funked up way. I-Deck is a touch screen music player that revitalizes album art and user interaction which has been lost in current mp3 format. You simply dock your mp3 player into the base and use the touch screen to cycle through and select your tracks, flick it to skip, spin it to fast-forward and turn it to play. Then sit back and watch the album art play. From the Nirvana baby floating through to Madonna in a leotard, album art is back in vogue. by Andy G

With world oil prices continuing to soar through the roof, alternative transport energy is a hot topic. The world's latest design in electric cars comes from what is possibly the world's most unlikely source, a fashion design house. Unveiled this week by Paris-based house Maison de Courr√®ges, the Zoop is a high performance 150 kw three-seater electric car. Designers Andre and Coqueline Courre®ges got their start in fashion working for the legendary French house Balenciaga. Thanks to them the worlds of fashion and engineering may no longer be worlds apart. by Billy T

ART LIGHTS
E-mail Tuesday, 11 July 2006

Lighting has become a key element of interior design. The humble light bulb and lamp shade has morphed into all sorts of artistic creations. This new collection by Italian design firm Artmide is a case in point. The lines between art and lighting have been fabulously blurred. Art installation or living room light? Who cares, as long as we can buy one. by Lisa Evans

DINNER IN THE SKY
E-mail Monday, 10 July 2006

You might think that eating dinner off the ground would be hard to come by, and possibly not all that appetizing.  Apart from weedy dinners on airplanes, there is little else that you can choose from.  But now, thanks to Dinner In The Sky, up to 22 people can dine in anywhere, from a golf course to a castle to a public square, in complete elegance.  A chef, waiter and entertainer accompany the guests, providing food, wine and music as you feast on both victuals and visuals.  And remember what they say about what mountain air does to your appetite.  Being this high will obviously cut the calories in half.  by Guy Logan via Springwise

SCI-FI COPS AND ROBBERS

Thieves and criminal thrill seekers beware – the police car chase will never be the same again. Thanks to some sophisticated new technology created by Virginia-based company Starchase, police can now track crooks by shooting Batman-esque GPS homing devices like darts and sticking them to the back of fleeing vehicles. Instead of a frantic pursuit, the pursing police cruiser eases off and allows police headquarters to track the suspect by computer. Police can then move in for a calmer arrest. by Billy T via Popular Science

PIXEL ADS NOW TAKING OVER A BUILDING
E-mail Friday, 30 June 2006

Image

What started as a nerdy concept for the creator of the milliondollarhomepage.com has now spread into a building version in the same vein. So that we're on the same page (pardon the pun), milliondollarhomepage.com is a site devised by a 20-year-old 'minipreneur'. The site is a visual bombardment of advertising pixels on one page, and has earned its creator over a million dollars in advertising sales. Now the concept has been applied to a building developed by the Sandberg Institute. With companies like Nike and Apple on board, the concept simply cant fail. by Billy T

CARVERTISING

Is it an air bag or an affair bag? This new advertisement takes life saving air bags to a new and sexy height. The usually dull bags which inflate upon impact have caused controversy in the past over the fact that they actually can harm you upon inflation. These new bags are bound to cause even further controversy. Clever, funny and edgy , the campaign takes to the highways in a most 'revealing' manner. Could this be the ultimate SAFE SEX campaign? by Billy T via Sexculptures

FUERZABRUTA
E-mail Monday, 26 June 2006

Att: London readers.  Get your credit cards ready, and book your seat now at 'Fuerzabruta', one of the most extraordinary shows you'll ever see. In the same vein as Cirque Du Soleil's Las Vegas spectaculars Le Reve and Ka and O, 'Fuerzabruta‚' is a celebration of pure physicality, where performers move seamlessly between three stages -  ground , air and underwater - to a thumping score that'll make you feel as if you're in an experimental Paris nightclub. Sexy, exhilarating and breath-taking to say the least. The audience is obliged to stand during the performance, but really, you'd be giving the same amount of standing ovations anyway. Fuerzabruta is on at the Round House Theatre until August 31. by Billy T
